WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN THE FIRST SESSION?

1.   In the first session, the client will complete a personal information sheet as well as signing a confidentiality form.

2.   It is important to get a background of the client and a better understanding of what the client wants to achieve by attending these counselling sessions.

3.   After the first session, the counselling process will then be able to take form as the client expresses their thoughts, feelings and emotions.

HOW MANY SESSIONS DO I NEED?

Everyone’s circumstances are different therefore, the number of sessions will vary from person to person. The counsellor will evaluate the situation and discuss the individual plan with the client. The intention of the counselling sessions is not to prolong sessions but for the client to try and find some solutions in going forward as soon as he/she is ready.

The number of counselling sessions required may vary and the client can at any point decide to withdraw. However, in practice it is found that depending on the severity of the problem, clients usually see a difference within the following timeframes:

  • 1-4 sessions

  • 1-6 sessions

  • 1-12 Sessions (for more severe cases)

In the first session, personal information and the consent form will be completed. Afterwards, the primary reason for attending counselling will be discussed. It is also relevant to get the client’s background/history in the first session in order to get a better perspective of helping with the healing process.

HOW DOES THE THERAPY PROCESS WORK?

Registered Counsellors are not permitted to do psychotherapy and if this is required a referral will be made to a Psychologist. The first session you will be attending will include the administrative process of completing the documentation and thereafter the reason/ problem will be discussed. After the first session, the counsellor can give you an idea of what to expect in the next session and how many sessions are envisaged. This will be re-assessed as the sessions proceed.

It is also important for the client to be honest and open about their feelings, experiences and anxieties. This will allow the counsellor and client to be able to work together developing coping skills and allowing the client to deal with or avoid similar situations. The counsellor is there to facilitate the process for the client and to look at possible solutions or ways forward.
